# Extended Detection and Response XDR

Security platform that correlates signals across endpoints, identity, email, network, and cloud — catching attacks that any single layer would miss in isolation.

## Detailed definition

**Extended Detection and Response** is what happens when you stop looking at endpoint security in isolation and start correlating it with everything else an attacker touches. Most real breaches don’t live on a single endpoint — they start with a phishing email, escalate through stolen credentials, move laterally through the network, and end with data exfiltration to a cloud bucket. Each step is detectable on its own layer, but the _connection_ between steps is where attackers hide. XDR is the layer that draws the lines.

## What XDR pulls in beyond endpoints

* **Identity** — Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, Okta sign-in patterns, MFA failures, impossible-travel alerts
* **Email** — phishing detection, attachment sandboxing, business email compromise patterns
* **Network** — firewall logs, DNS queries, lateral-movement signatures
* **Cloud** — AWS / Azure / Google Cloud configuration drift, IAM anomalies, unexpected API calls
* **Productivity suites** — Microsoft 365 audit logs, SharePoint/Drive access patterns

## XDR vs SIEM — what’s the difference?

A SIEM (Security Information and Event Management system) collects logs from everywhere and lets a human write queries to find patterns. An XDR pre-builds those queries, ships pre-tuned detections, and integrates response — you click “isolate endpoint” or “kill session” from the same console where you saw the alert. SIEM is a power tool for a SOC analyst; XDR is a turnkey detection platform for everyone else.

For SMBs without a dedicated security team, XDR (often delivered through an [MDR](/glossary/mdr/) service so someone is actually watching) is the practical way to get enterprise-grade cross-domain detection without enterprise-grade staffing.
